NEW DELHI: It’s been over two months and a half since the Myanmarese military seized power in a coup and jailed pro-democracy leaders, including state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi. Even since, the country has been rocked by protests against the junta in which over 700 people have been killed. Western countries have imposed sanctions on the military leadership but that hasn’t quite helped. ASEAN, the 10-member regional bloc of which Myanmar is a member, has been divided on how to approach the crisis. Later this week, junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing will attend an ASEAN summit in Jakarta. In this episode of ‘The Gist’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale and Khin Mai Aung, Advisory Board Member of the Asia Centre (Bangkok), look at the road ahead for Myanmar, whether it’s headed for a civil war and the role of regional players.
