The Aegean Sea, an arm of the Mediterranean Sea, is an 83,000-square-mile stretch between Europe and Asia. It lies between Greece and Turkey and has been a point of contention between the two countries. Strategically the position of the Aegean islands is very important as they are in close proximity to Turkey but are controlled by Greece. It is a naturally rich region with approximately 2 billion barrels of oil and 4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas which is still unexplored.
