NEW DELHI: China’s economy is in deep distress, according to a Wall Street Journal report on Sunday. Foreign investment is falling, trade figures are not rosy, the government has stopped publicising unemployment figures among youth, all in all it seems China’s economy is tanking.

In this chat on The Gist, Sriparna Pathak, Associate Prof. at the Jindal School of International Affairs, looks at the facts on the ground and how accurate Western reports on China’s economy are. While some Western reports may reflect their political need to show China in a bad light, the fact is China is in trouble over bad domestic policies driven by bad politics.

While it seems President Xi Jinping is seeking to change the economic track towards more high tech, but it’s not clear technology requires the kind of numbers turned out by universities and engineering colleges. The downturn in China also has implications for the world.

Tune in for more in this conversation with Prof. Sriparna Pathak of the Jindal School of International Affairs.
