NEW DELHI: It’s not exactly known whether India has a document outlining the national security strategy but there’s none in the public domain so far. As efforts to bring about jointness among the three Services gather pace, there’s chatter about the need to first get a national security strategy in place. But is that the necessary prerequisite? The presence of such a strategy can’t be the deal-maker nor the absence of it be a deal-breaker for theaterisation, argues Rear Admiral Sudarshan Shrikhande (Retd), a former naval intelligence officer. In this chat with StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, he says India should study the national security strategy documents of countries such as the United States and Russia in depth to imbibe the best practices there and also learn from their shortcomings.
